Design Statement: A Mashup of Period Research and Seurat
Translating Georges Seurat’s painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” into costumes begins with setting the design rules for these clothes. Rule one- silhouettes are based on research from the mid 1880s. Rule two- all of the selected fabrics used had to have multiple colors woven into them. Rule three- the color palette was derived from Seurat’s work.
The biggest challenge of this design was a costume that was described in the stage directions as, “The dress opens and Dot walks out of it.” And then later “…she steps back into it, resumes pose…” George’s model Dot, has to step away from her bustle dress which remained standing on the stage while she interacts with an oblivious George. I almost always need to solve challenges like this before I can costume the rest of the production.
