Design Statement: Playing With Time and Style
The characters in this play are costumed on a timeline, from Elizabethan to the 21st century. Juliet is a rebel and non-conformist; she wears mostly 21st century clothing until she capitulates to her mother’s wishes. Other characters are on a different style timeline; the Prince is the most Elizabethan, Tybalt and Mercutio are in the middle and Romeo is closer to Juliet’s style. For several of the characters in the middle of our timeline we created doublets out of modern hoodies. We also ignored traditional fasteners and used a lot of zippers.
