Design Statement: 1833 Through the Lens of 1933
Based on Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty, Pirated!tells the story of movie studio in 1933 filming a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance. Actors who are providing the sound stage a coupe and hijack the actors who are performing the roles. Chaos ensues as costumes are stolen and actors run around in their underwear. The deus ex machina is when all the performers are informed about the inception of the Screen Actors Guild and their rights as performers. The costumes were a mix of the 1930s and how a 100 year earlier period could be created with 1930s underpinnings.
